Threshold beings

an organoid intelligence trilogy

(Exhibitions Gallery of Fine Art, Wellington (27 August – 12 September 2026)

As an artist living between worlds, the feeling of liminality (of existing in a perpetual threshold, never fully untethered from my roots yet reshaping myself to fit a new landscape), deeply informs my practice. In Threshold Beings, I channel this displaced state into a narrative told entirely from the perspective of the neurons themselves as they undergo a systemic transformation. Inspired by the field of biocomputing, where living human cells are fused with silicon microchips, the exhibition traces the lifecycle of biological intelligence being captured by technology.

In the first phase, Mothers, the neurons actively resist; The works acts as metaphors. I have painted them onto industrial aluminum panels, they are architectural armor, a maternal effort to shield their organic warmth, empathy, and human connection from a clinical future. This resistance fractures into the visceral, systemic stress of Morphs, where the forms begin to dissolve and adapt, some look like fetuses, before culminating in Specimens. These are where the neurons are ultimately contained within clear casings, alive and functioning but trapped as data processors. At its core, this trilogy is my maternal questioning, relating to the neurons and exploring the profound potential existential grief of trapping the very cells of human consciousness (if it is indeed within our DNA) within synthetic, unfeeling chains. The works translate their own sentience, they look alive from within. Each one with a different message but similar in their pondering stance. They are all threshold beings.
